The cracks of asphalt pavement can be divided into transverse cracks, longitudinal cracks and network cracks according to their causes. Crack is a main damage form of asphalt pavement.
(1) Transverse crack refers to the crack perpendicular to the driving direction. According to the different causes, it can be divided into load crack and non load crack. Load crack is due to improper design of pavement structure or poor construction quality or serious overload of vehicles, resulting in tensile stress in asphalt surface or semi-rigid base exceeding its fatigue strength. (2) One of the reasons for the longitudinal cracks is that the joints of the two sections are not well treated when the asphalt surface is spread in different sections, and gradually crack under the action of vehicle load and environmental factors; the other is due to the uneven compaction of the subgrade (including the half fill and half cut section) or the uneven settlement of the subgrade edge caused by water immersion.
(3) Network cracks are mainly caused by the lack of overall strength of the pavement. The reason may be the pavement structure
Unreasonable design, insufficient compactness of subgrade and pavement, improper proportioning or unevenness of pavement materials, etc., or due to the failure of timely sealing after transverse or longitudinal cracks on the pavement, water seeps into the lower layer, resulting in the decline of the overall strength of the pavement. The aging of asphalt pavement during construction and long-term use is also one of the reasons for the formation of Network Cracks in asphalt pavement.
